End of my first month

I just finished my first rotation as an intern and survived. I was in the NICU all month taking care of sick babies, mostly premature babies that live in isolettes that look like little terrariums. I didn't have a good experience with NICU during my one week rotation in third year of medical school so I thought I would hate it. Turns out I actually liked it a lot. We had a great team that got along well together. The attendings were not like they make them out to be on Scrubs. They were very down to earth and taught us well. I enjoyed learning about all the different ventilators and how to adjust the settings on them based on the results we would get from blood gases and labs. My best memory is how one of my patients developed sepsis or an infection in the blood and how once we started antibiotics a few days later he started being weaned off his ventilator support and was soon extubated. He was my rockstar.

Today I had my first continuity clinic. My clinic is every Wednesday in the afternoon. Typically, we will start each day off with some sort of conference and quick teaching lesson. They tried to start me off easy with only two patients, only they had scheduled four for me. I got through it okay and even got a verbal pat on the back, so that felt good. Our clinic is probably the most efficient well organized clinics I've ever been a part of. The building is brand new and the staff and attendings are excellent. I'm looking forward to clinic next week.

This next rotation I'm going to be on Newborn nursery, which should all be healthy babies ready to go home soon. I kind of miss the NICU, but I have to move on.
